An Award-Winning Menu for Oscar!
Greetings and salutations! We are pleased to announce this year’s menu for the Academy Awards, which will be airing LIVE tomorrow night!
A bit of background. It was 1995 when David Letterman was slated to host the Academy Awards. A love of Dave prompted my great friend Joe Gulla to suggest a gathering at my small apartment to view the festivities. There was a pool to see who’d choose the most winners in all categories with a booby prize also for the person who chose the least. I don’t know how we came up with the idea to use the Best Picture nominations to create the food options, but we did. When the next year came about, Joe decided to head to LA to be a part of the event. In his honor of being there, I did it again… only now I started honing my artistic skills and using the actual movie posters to showcase my edible creations. It’s been a tradition ever since.
Now to outline the yearly challenge – to create a full meal from the Best Picture nominations, which before last year, was just 5. It needs to work with the movie titles and/or plots in some way. Sometimes they are a “stretch” but as long as it’s all delicious and we aren’t cheating (meaning we couldn’t make 3 desserts and 2 appetizers – must be a full meal), it’s great!
The latest added challenge has been having 10 Best Picture nominations – there must be 10 separate dishes now. We rose to the challenge well last year. This year I think we are right on! Let’s see if you agree. And the winning menu is…
Appetizers!! The Pigs Are Rolled Tight (The Kids Are All Right) – Piggies in a Blanket… Indiption (Inception) – 7 Layer Dip (plot centers on going layers into dreams)… Black Prawn (Black Swan) – Blackened Shrimp.
Main Course!! The So-Called Notpork (The Social Network) – London Broil (Get it? Calling beef “not pork” – heh heh)… Soy Story 3 (Toy Story 3) – medley of 3: Edamame (soybeans), Broccoli, & Water Chestnuts.
True Grits (True Grit) – Cheddar Grits… The Biter (The Fighter) – Crunchy Croutoned Salad with White Balsamic Vinaigrette.
Desserts!! Winter’s Scone (Winter’s Bone) – Cranberry Orange Scones… 127 Sours (127 Hours) – 127 Mini Anginette Cookies with Lemon Icing… The King’s Peach (The King’s Speech) – English Peach Puff Pastries.
We want to thank all of our friends and family for helping us think through all of our choices. Most especially this year, I want to thank 11-year old Eric Mogol for not only coming up with Black Prawn in a flash, but only in working with him, was I able to create most of these selections. This pig is rolled – ummm ooops! This KID is ALL RIGHT! 🙂
Let us know what you’re serving for your Oscar viewing and what you think of our menu. See you on the Red Carpet!
