Time to plan the menu! The 2015 Oscar® Nominations are out!!!

Statue cookies created by my mom, Toni Zito! Everyone got one as a parting gift!Hey there!

Happy New Year!!!! It’s been awhile since I’ve written. So much good stuff going on that I’ll soon be sharing. 2014 went out deliciously and this new year is starting off wonderfully!!!

So down to business… it’s time to create the 2015 KitchAnnette menu inspired by Oscar® Best Picture Nominations! It is NOT an easy year but it’s starting to come together. You are invited to share your ideas! Ready?

Here are the nominations:

– American Sniper: The Most Lethal Sniper in US History

– Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)

– Boyhood

– The Grand Budapest Hotel (Hotel Grand Budapest)

– The Imitation Game: Behind Every Code Is An Enigma

– Selma: One Dream Can Change The World

– The Theory of Everything: The Incredible Story of Jane and Stephen Hawking

– Whiplash

You know the rules. There will be an appetizer, main dish, side dish, salad, and dessert. The remaining 3 will likely be an additional app, side dish, and dessert. It should be a cohesive meal and this year, I’d like it to lean towards an Italian cuisine. Please also toss in your thoughts for signature cocktails.

I am 99% sure I have 2-4 figured out but nothing is in stone yet.

And (shameless plug) don’t forget to get a copy of KitchAnnette™ Red Carpet Menus for your cooking and reading enjoyment!

I’ll be back to you when the menu is finalized so hurry with your rousing recommendations!

Hi, I haven’t seen the new menu for 2015 Oscar.  Did you send?  I was looking for a desert.  I might use the torte from your book. I am going to an early dinner party on Sunday.  Anna, my neighbor, is cooking her Italian meal for us.  She and her mother make at home every weekend.   So I want to bring something special.  I was thinking of The Lord of the Rings Torte.   Unless you have something special and easy for 2015   Cathy

Hi Cathy! Here it is! https://kitchannette.wordpress.com/2015/01/23/our-2015-oscars-red-carpet-menu-has-arrived/ The dinner has taken on an Italian angle which is going to work with Anna’s dishes! I have been tweaking the recipes and will be releasing them with a video. You can never go wrong with that chocolatey good and easy torte but if you want to stay in with this year’s menu, I’ve got for Selma – Selmalina – A semolina cake with chocolate glaze. It’s so easy to make. The texture is crumbly and reminiscent of a corn cake. It’s just the right sweetness and then the chocolate glaze… oh YEAH! Sound good? I’ve got the recipe for you now! The pan – round pan, square pan – whatever you want to use. It doesn’t rise much so cook accordingly. I used a 9×13 glass dish – it didn’t look like it would spread to the whole dish but it did!
Preheat oven to 350° – Bake for 20-35 minutes
      1 stick unsalted butter, softened
      1 cup sugar
      2 eggs
      1/2 cup milk
1/2 teaspoon vanilla or almond extract (or orange or lemon – you can choose the flavor profile your prefer)
      2 cups semolina flour
      1 teaspoon baking powder
      1/2 teaspoon baking soda
      pinch of salt

Cream butter & sugar then add eggs, milk, extract. In a different bowl, mix the rest of the ingredients then combine all and mix well. The texture will not be smooth. Grease pan and spread in the batter. Bake until golden – tester should come out clean. Let it cool and serve.

You can do any kind of glaze or topping – honey, berries, etc., but I’m using the yummy chocolate glaze:
      2 tbsp butter
      2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa
      2 tbsp water
      1/2 tsp
      1 cups confectioner’s sugar

Melt butter in small saucepan, add cocoa and water, stirring until it thickens – don’t boil. Take off heat, add in vanilla then little by little, whisk in the confectioner’s sugar! Voila! If you want it thinner, you can add a little water while it’s hot. You will eat this out of the pan!

Keep me posted on your Oscar festivities!

Hi Maureen! Love your ideas. I realize I should have figured on some sort of cupcake for GBH but after working on it and leaning towards the harder movies first, it has become Grand BudaPESTO Mozzarell’ as an appetizer – crostini with tomato, fresh mozzarella, and topped with heavenly pesto. Your Selma is not far off the final – I chose “Selmalina” – a semolina cake that actually has a cornbread-like texture. Take a look at the final: https://kitchannette.wordpress.com/2015/01/23/our-2015-oscars-red-carpet-menu-has-arrived/ Thanks so much for playing along!! It was the hardest year yet! Annette
