Outlandish Oatlander! Scottish Oatcakes to Celebrate Outlander Season 3!
It’s got to be over 15 years ago when my sisters first raved about a book called “Outlander” by Diana Gabaldon. The premise of the book focuses on a British WWII combat nurse on her second honeymoon in Scotland after the war. She comes upon standing stones and is transported back 200 years. Her quest to return to her beloved husband is complicated when she’s forced to marry a man that she falls passionately in love with. What’s she going to do – stay in the past or go back to her time? Decisions, decisions…
Yeah, yeah… I know about now you’ve got it relegated to the “Harlequin Romance” category but I must say NO! The author’s style is not “flowery” or “precious”. She details the experience of this “modern” woman in the 18th century in a strong voice. Claire has mettle and grit – not a shrinking violet or damsel in distress. Which serves her well with the Highlanders and most especially Jamie, the surprise love of her life. And the way he’s depicted… well he will be the love of yours too! Hahaha!
There are several books in the series that weave in true historical scenarios – the Jacobite uprising of 1745… the American Revolution… it’s very compelling on many levels. Many fans were hoping for a film for YEARS with trepidation of how even a 2 hour movie could capture the complexities. A series could and has done so beautifully on STARZ, with the premiere episode of Season 3 being upon us. Woo hoo! In honor of the show, I’m sharing a Scottish staple, oatcakes.
Here’s how:
Oats are a basic staple in Scotland to this day. They are more versatile than we’re accustomed to, being a perfect base for sweet and savory dishes. They’re also a great gluten-free alternative (although you should always read the packages in case of any other ingredients) and have good health benefits. Yeah!
Enjoy these oatcakes on their own or top them with whatever you like – guacamole, jam. cream cheese, brie, bacon & eggs, salsa, yogurt, fresh fruit, etc.
Here’s to another great season of Outlander! Slàinte!
